Belly dancing and steamy Latin rhythms were just some of the ways older residents got in the mood today for an annual celebration of mature adulthood.

The festival programme for this year's Celebrating Age Festival was launched this morning at the SavaCentre in Colliers Wood.

The event featured performers from a number of community groups for over-50s in the borough, who showed off dance steps from all over the world.

Festival organiser, Sue Tickner, said: “We always have a lot of fun and want to encourage as many of our older residents as possible to join in the celebration.”

Celebrating Age will take place from September 5-18, aims to offer people the chance to learn something new and meet new people.

Ms Tickner added: “It’s important to highlight the fact that getting older is something that should be enjoyed.

“It often means you have more time free to spend on finding new interests and developing fresh skills.”

Guests included dance enthusiasts from Indian, African-Caribbean, and Chinese community groups, as well as Merton and Morden Guild and Age Concern’s belly dancing groups.

Linda Kirby, Merton Council member for adult social care and health, said: “The festival is the main event of the year when it comes to celebrating the talents and contributions of the over 50s in Merton.”

The festival is now in its ninth year.

Brochures are available at over 100 outlets in Merton including libraries, churches and community centres.
