A spate of thefts from vans has prompted warnings for people to be extra careful when leaving tools inside.

A drill was stolen from a parked Suzuki Carry van in Vaux Crescent, Hersham, between 10.15pm, on Sunday, July 17, and 8am, on Monday, July 18.

Another van, a white Citroen Berlingo, was broken into at Westcar Lane, Walton, and more than £2,000 worth of items stolen, including Bosch drills and a radio, between 5.30pm, on Friday, July 15 and 7.30am, on Monday, July 18.

Thieves also smashed the window of a white Mercedes Sprinter van, parked in Princes Road, Weybridge, between 9.30am, on Sunday, July 17, and 6.15am, on Monday, July 18, taking a set of golf clubs, worth about £3,000.

Elmbridge crime reduction adviser Elaine Burtenshaw said: “When tools are stolen it can cause a great deal of stress for the owner, particularly if they are self-employed. Apart from the hassle of trying to replace them it is often very costly and can provide a major blow to small businesses.

“There are however a number of steps van owners can take to deter thieves, including removing their tools and work equipment if their vehicle is unattended for a lengthy period.

“Leaving tools inside a secure lock box in a van may seem like a good idea but is not advisable unless you also have a security cage; there have been a number of thefts where the thieves have simply taken the entire box.

“If you have been offered tools for sale or have any information about who may be stealing them then please contact Surrey Police.”

Van owners have also been advised to use a garage if they have one, park in well-lit areas and consider installing an alarm system.

Anyone with any information should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
