Health experts have issued an alert warning residents about Spanish eggs after discovering a link with deadly bacteria salmonella.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has notified residents after eggs containing the bacteria were found in cafes in Sutton and on sale in shops.

The majority of cases were discovered in the north of England but experts believe the infected eggs have moved south due to an increase in cases of food poisoning linked to people eating Spanish eggs.

The eggs linked with the illness are stamped 3ES4504734A but caterers buying boxes of eggs should look out for the code 3ES450470000034A on the packaging.

Councillor Simon Wales, Sutton Council’s communities spokesman, said: “Caterers and the public are advised to check the code on eggs that they are buying.

“Salmonella can cause serious illness and I’d advise people to take a safety first attitude.”

You can return the eggs to the shop where you bought them but anyone using them must ensure they are thoroughly cooked.

Alternatively, you should wash your hands thoroughly after touching the eggs and disinfect any surface that was touched by it.

Salmonella bacteria are killed by thorough cooking but caterers are advised to purchase their eggs from hens that have been accredited as “salmonella-free”.

Vulnerable people, the elderly, infants, pregnant women and those who are already in poor health should avoid eating lightly cooked eggs.

According to the FSA between 150-400 people die each year in the UK from contracting salmonella.
