New plans have been submitted for an 82-bedroom Travelodge in Epsom.

The planning application for The Parade, has been submitted to Epsom and Ewell council.

A previous application was refused by the planning committee in 2009.

Storm Land and Estates have put forward the scheme, which they claim would bring an estimated £1 million to the local economy per year, which would see the demolition of the long standing Comrades Club. But instead of being angered by builders moving in, the Comrades Club have welcomed the plans, which would secure the future of the 500-stong member club with an agreement they will operate out of the hotel’s ground floor.

Peter Leaver, club secretary of the comrades club, said: "While our membership numbers are at a very strong level the building we are in is in constant need of refurbishment.

"We have been here for 90 years now and the maintenance costs are not getting any cheaper.

"Being able to remain at No 1 The Parade, but operate in brand new facilities would be ideal for us and our members."

Since its refusal in 2009, plans for the hotel have been altered and redesigned. Robert Ryan, development manager for Travelodge Hotels, said: "I hope people who were not happy with the original proposal we had back in 2009 will come to the public exhibition and see the changes we have made.

"We have reduced the height and taken the building further back from the street.

"This site has been recognised by the council as prime for a hotel development and I now hope we can show the planning committee that we have listened and responded to their concerns."

A public exhibition will be held between 10 and 8pm on July 28 at The Comrades Club to give local residents and retailers the opportunity to discuss and see the proposals.

The consultation period is due to end on August 19, with a final decision expected by September 23.
