The filming of the second series of a hit TV comedy series set in Sutton is due to begin next week.

The cast and crew of Channel 4 series Phoneshop will begin shooting in Sutton High Street, in the former Pizza Hut, on Monday.

The series, which centres on the working day of the employees at a mobile phone shop, was recommissioned after achieving strong ratings during its debut run last autumn.

Filming is expected to take six weeks and again include other locations in Sutton. Some of the first series’ scenes were shot in the High Street in bar Ivory Lounge, and Zizzis.

Phil Bowker, the programmes’ writer and producer, said: "We're all really excited to be coming back to Sutton this summer.

"We had a great time last year and everybody made us feel really welcome, especially Conrad the Wizard."

Martin Furtaeur-Hayes, Sutton’s town centre manager, said: “This is great news for the town centre. I know the producers were looking at other locations such as Croydon and Kingston, but we have a 'can do' attitude here in Sutton which producers and location managers appreciate.

“The owners of the old Pizza Hut site will make money by hiring out their premises for filming, while nearby businesses will also benefit when the production crew spends money in local shops.

“We are fast-making Sutton one of the most film-friendly boroughs in London and will continue working hard to attract production companies and boost the local economy.”

Last year Sutton was used to film hit TV series The Apprentice, Peep Show, Law and Order UK, Psychoville, and Misfits.

Hollywood filmmakers also looked at using Sutton to shoot Hollywood blockbusters X-Men: First Class, and Pirates of the Caribbean:On Stranger Tides.

The first series of Phoneshop was filmed in the retail unit which is now occupied by a clothes shop.

It averaged 739,000 viewers across the first series’ six episodes.
