Archaeologists are uncovering the foundations of a 16th century mansion.
Volunteers from the Friends of Honeywood Museum have been leading the excavation of Oaks Mansion in Oaks Park.
The home most famously belonged to the 12th Earl of Derby in the 18th and 19th century.
It was at the grounds that the Earl and his friends initiated a sweepstake horse race which went on to become the Epsom Derby.
Archaeologists have been working on the site since 2009.
They are currently looking for a for the remains of a pit used for cock fighting.
It was built in the grounds by the Earl in the late 18th century.
Tom Brake MP recently visited the grounds to meet volunteers.
He said: “The Oaks Mansion was a landmark in Carshalton for centuries. It’s great to see such a strong grassroots effort to unearth this centre piece of our local heritage.”
