Carshalton and Wallington MP Tom Brake has urged residents to report any out-of-the-ordinary helicopter activity this summer.

The request comes 12 months after the borough was plagued with helicopters last summer.

In recent years, the numbers of helicopters flying over Sutton has increased substantially due to the increase in traffic in and out of the London Heliport in Battersea.

Sutton lies directly beneath the route between Redhill Aerodrome and Battersea, and dozens of helicopters fly over the borough every day.

Mr Brake plans to submit any residents complaints to the Department for Transport for consulatation.

He said: “The consultation will examine the future foundations behind a greener aviation policy.

“The noise generated by these helicopters continually causes disruption to people’s everyday lives.

“If we can get the concerns of local residents into the hands of the Department for Transport, hopefully we will see some long-awaited progress with this issue.”

The MP has spoken out in the past against the disruption caused by helicopters, calling on London Mayor Boris Johnson to tackle the noise over the skies of Sutton in August 2009.

A London Assembly report, commissioned in 2007 into the issue of helicopter noise, acknowledged how much it affected residents.

It said: “Our investigation has drawn attention to the less publicised issue of helicopter noise, which is having a negative impact on the quality of life for many people.”

The report also confirmed London is limited to 12,000 commercial helicopter flights per year, which on average is about 30 per day.

But it conceded that emergency services and military helicopter movements are exempt from the 12,000 limit.

Commercial helicopter flights can operate between 7am and up to 11pm every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s day.

A spokesman for the council said they had not had any complaints from residents over the issue Have you noticed an increase in helicopter traffic in the last few weeks? Call the newsdesk on 020 8722 6357.
