A brass band took part in a marathon in Epsom Market Place at the weekend as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The Bandstand Marathon, now in its fourth year, aims to breathe new life into public spaces with 100 bands taking to bandstands across the UK on Sunday, September 25, to perform at the same time.

This year the London Saxophone Choir set up at the Epsom Market Place for a two hour afternoon performance.

The Cultural Olympiad is a project designed to encourage creativity in film, music and the arts with the Bandstand Marathon recognising amateur musical talent to reflect the amateur athletes who will be participating in the 2012 Games.

Residents Association Councillor David Mayall, vice chair of the leisure committee, said: "I think it’s a great idea to involve local musicians.

We are also trying to get together all the school choirs and we are also thinking about a school sports Olympiad. It’s one of a range of events that we will hopefully bring to the borough."

Ali Smith, director of event organisers Superact, added: "The Bandstand Marathon started life in 2008 with the aim of enlivening public spaces and celebrating the nations much loved bandstands."
