A film festival promoting better mental health awareness will be held next week.

The Brixton Reel festival explores psychological wellbeing amongst ethnic minorities living in Lambeth.

The event, which is supported by NHS Lambeth, features free screenings of Brazilian, Asian and British films, as well as the premiere of a short film made by young people in Tulse Hill.

Throughout the week, people can also try their hand at Bollywood dancing and yoga.

According to the NHS, between 30,000 and 53,000 people in Lambeth are affected by common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.

Festival organiser Cary Sawhney said: “We have a range of feel-good events which aim to engage people who have not thought about these issues before, and to break down the difficult topic of mental health.

"We all suffer mental health issues at some point in our lives. You can improve your mental health step by step. If you look after your heart, then you can look after your physical wellbeing."

Ruth Wallis, Director of Public Health at NHS Lambeth said: "It is fantastic how this project has grown in a just few years, using film and entertainment as a fun and inclusive way to engage people on what mental wellbeing means and how to improve it."

The festival runs from October 5-13. Visit www.brixtonreel.co.uk for more information.
