The chairman of Kingston Hospital has said its future is secure as he prepares to take over at another London hospital.

Christopher Smallwood, a former economics editor at the Sunday Times, will join St George’s Hospital in Tooting on November 1, after nearly three years at the helm.

He announced his departure at the hospital’s AGM last Thursday but said: “I envisage this hospital will continue to be an independent hospital foundation trust.

“I don’t think there is any likelihood that Kingston Hospital will merge with another hospital.”

He said the hospital’s five year plan was based on “very testing” assumptions of 4 to 5 per cent savings.

He acknowledged the current Better Services, Better Value review of healthcare and hospitals across south west London led by GPs and other clinicians saying: “As it stands now I don’t anticipate any substantial changes.”

But Michael Walker, of the union Unison said: "Within five years I am convinced Kingston will merge.

"We keep being told it is not on the agenda but it is obvious.

"All hospitals are looking for partners in what will be a very hostile climate under the new NHS bill."
