A pensioner is missing after a fire broke out at warden-assisted accommodation last night.

The residential care home was evacuated after fire broke out at about midnight.

The fire started was in Gibson Court, in Manor Road North, Hinchley Wood.

A Surrey Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “On arrival a flat was found to be on fire and the flames had spread to the roof.

“Forty people were evacuated and Elmbridge Council, the police the ambulance service and Red Cross ensured the residents were looked after.

“Unfortunately one resident remains unaccounted for and we are trying to locate them. An investigation into the cause of the fire will take place."

Dave Knight lives in nearby Manor Drive.

He said: “The noise woke my wife, she thought it was raining. It was just a crackling, we could hear it where we were and could see the flames above the houses.

"There were very big flames and a lot of fire engines. They are still going now, they must be damping it down.”

Manor Road North is still closed from the junction with Manor Drive to the Claygate Lane Junction.

The fire has been put out this morning, but six engines remained on site.

Manor Road North re-opened this morning, but traffic was still restricted into Gibson and Royston courts.
