A teenager who killed a man he punched to the ground with a single blow has been sentenced to three years in a young offenders institute.

19-year-old Charlie McBride was sentenced today today at Maidstone Crown Court for the manslaughter of Richard Collier, 25.

Mr Collier suffered fatal injuries after being knocked unconscious by McBride in an unprovoked late-night attack in Marine Parade, Margate on 25 June this year.

He had been out with friends in the town to a casino and a bar.

McBride, from Brighton Road, Sutton, who was visiting friends and family in Margate, ran off after the attack but handed himself into Kent Police two days later.

Mr Collier, from Wellington Crescent, Ramsgate, never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at around noon the same day.

McBride, who had no previous convictions and had never been in trouble with police before, bowed his head throughout the hearing.

Mr Collier’s directly addressed McBride in court while giving a victim impact statement, during a tense hearing.

McBride had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing.

Detective inspector Chris Carter, from the Kent and Essex serious crime directorate, said: “This was a seemingly stupid and reckless act which ultimately caused the unnecessary death of a young man with everything to live for.

“What is particularly sad is that we still do not know what the motivation was behind that fatal blow.”
