Three cars and a lorry are alight at a warehouse fire in Chessington.

Loud bangs and explosions emanated from the fire which is on the edge of Chessington Equestrian centre, an eyewitness has said.

Firefighters are tackling a large blaze at an address they gave as Northfield Bungalow in Clayton Road, although they said the fire was not a residential property.

The top of Clayton Road at the junction of Somerset Avenue has been closed off and residents are being told to stay indoors.

London Fire Brigade said the single-storey building described as a container or warehouse contains vehicles and equipment.

A number of cylinders are also involved but police said the A3 would not be closed.

A resident of Somerset Avenue who asked not to be named, said: "I heard an explosion and went around there.

"We were worried about the horses.

"There was just a big ball of fire and acrid black smoke followed by 20 minutes of explosions which were still going once the fire brigade got there.

"It sounded like canisters going off."

Brian Gay, 73, who also lives in Somerset Avenue, said: "I couldn't see the flames, just the smoke, clouds of black smoke.

"There was no sky. It was that bad, from this angle at least. I could start smelling the smoke in the house."

Zaara-Takeesha Jay, who took pictures of the smoke from the fields, said: "When I was at the Hook Parade I could clearly see the black smoke.

"When I drove down Clayton Road there were three fire engines at the scene and two fire cars with pipes across the road.

"Due to this people had to wait and then I was driving slowly past the opening where the fire was.

"There were two loud bangs."

A caravan fire in April at Chessington Equestrian Centre led to the prospect of closing the A3 over fears about exploding canisters propelling themselves on to the road.
