A hospital has unveiled the first stage of its multi-million pound refurbishment.

Ashtead Hospital, managed by Ramsay Health Care, provides treatment for private and NHS patients and is now home to a lighter and brighter reception area as well as a spankin new care lounge for private patients.

The second phase will include a brand new MRI and CT scanner, as well as the refurbishment of 28 patient rooms.

MP for Epsom and Ewell, Chris Grayling, was on hand to cut the ribbon alongside CEO Jill Watts and general manager, Douglas Watson at its grand unveiling on Friday, October 6.

MP Chris Grayling said: "This is one of those places that you don’t really want to come to, but if you do have to come here then this is a fabulous facility.

"I know that by the time you have invested in all the different clinical treatments this is going to be a real beacon of care.

"It’s nice to hear a hospital talking about the long term future rather than the short term.

"To have a long term investment and owner is really good and I’m delighted that you are making that commitment."

Robert Taylor, a vascular surgeon at the hospital, added: "I think it’s an excellent idea.

"I'm convinced as a surgeon that if you provide patients with a nice environment they do better and this is something I have been fighting for in the NHS all my life."
