Four people have been arrested after a fatal smash on the M3 this morning, Tuesday, October 11.

The collision occurred on the London-bound carriageway shortly after 2am between junction three at Lightwater and junction two at Thorpe when a blue Citroen and a red Audi collided.

A man, who was a passenger in the Audi, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Citroen and one of the passengers of the Audi were taken to St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey with minor injuries but both have since been discharged.

Following the collision police officers arrested four people on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop and driving while unfit.

All four remain in police custody while enquiries continue.

Both carriageways of the M3 were closed for just under an hour while debris was cleared from the road.

Two lanes of the southbound carriageway have since been reopened but the northbound carriageway remains completely closed between junctions 3 and 2.

The northbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for some time and motorists are being advised to avoid the area until further notice.
