Special Halloween 2011 Promotion Recommend a friend or relative to the Renaissance Hair Salon at Carshalton College and receive 50% off your next treatment!!

Treatments on offer include shampoos, sets, blow drys, colouring, afro hair and perming.

Carshalton College has a great reputation for their Hairdressing courses. The courses have been running for nearly over 50 years since the College opened, making it one of the few original vocational courses on offer.

As the College has evolved and offered new courses, hairdressing has remained popular with great success rates, credit to the staff, placement opportunities and facilities.

Facilities There is a front of house salon that is open to the public, which is a realistic working environment, there is also a training salon where learning takes place in a creative atmosphere, the students gain their skills in the training salon and when ready, move over to Renaissance, the main commercial salon to complete services on clients, offering all services which include cutting, styling, coloring, perming. Level 3 students complete hair extensions, creative cutting, styling and coloring for local residents, staff and students at certain times of the year.

Customers receive high quality services at college prices. The salon allows the students to develop their social and communication skills by dealing with customers from day one.

Dedicated Staff The team of staff are professional and committed to helping students realise their ambitions. Bringing in speakers for Steiners Cruise liners, working with the students and entering national competitions, of which we came second this year, working at events such as “Hair at Good wood” styling hair for the stars eg Sandy Shaw.

The team also offers a small recruitment service to provide Apprentices for salons, and prospective students with jobs, we currently have salons over a wide area, from students placed in Harrods in Knightsbridge to salons in Redhill as well as local salons.

The staff are all dedicated practitioners who continue to work in industry, to keep updated of new trends, innovative ideas and practices, outside of their teaching role to ensure they are able to provide the best possible training for the students, the College’s new workforce. The tutors have to complete 30hrs extra training on top for CPD (continuous professional development) Tutor Sally Luckett said the rewards are worth the hard work required in this industry “It is very hard work but it is the best job in the world, you get to work with a variety of people and are part of team that gives students confidence to achieve a qualification and skills to work and make clients feel good about themselves. Before teaching, I worked at salons and then owned my own salon, treating celebrities at both. Teaching a trade that you love is so rewarding as you see the difference as the students progress. I was really proud of the students when we took them to work for L’Oreal to be part of the England team.”

Styling the Stars All the Staff have worked on a variety of famous people during their careers including Valerie Singleton, Cheryl Baker, X Factor contestants and Dame Kelly Holmes.

Career Opportunities Learning this trade leads to endless job opportunities including working on cruise ships, in theatre or television, freelance, styling models on catwalk shows, working with product manufacturers and teaching.

Fiona Chaffey, hair tutor and assessor, helps provide students an insight into the industry while training at the College “Volunteering and entering competitions gives the students an insight into a different world and open up an alternative avenue into the hair industry in addition to working in a salon. There are endless opportunities and one is working back stage at events and being a sessional stylist. For the students it allows them to practise their skills in a pressurised environment but provide work for their portfolio and CV on leaving College and the opportunity to network with industry contacts.”
