A van driver arrested on suspicion of causing the death of former British boxing champion Gary Mason will not face criminal charges.

Mason, 48, died when he was knocked off his bike during a collision with a white van in Sandy Lane South, Wallington, on January 6 this year.

The 43-year-old driver of the white Vauxhall combi van, stopped at the scene.

He was arrested and rebailed several times, as police continued to ask for witnesses to the crash to come forward.

After advice from the Crown Prosecution Service, police took the decision in the summer not to prosecute him in relation to Mr Mason's death.

A date for the inquest into Mason's death has yet to be set.

The 48-year-old, lived on the Roundshaw Estate in Wallington, where he ran his social enterprise, the Rhythmical Empowerment Group.

The group has been continued in his memory, renamed The Gary Mason Charity.

Mason's funeral at Carshalton All Saints Church Mason in February was attended by friends, family, community leaders and famous names from the world of boxing.

Former World Heavyweight boxing champion Lennox Lewis - the only man to ever defeat Mason - was in attendance, along with British boxing legend Frank Bruno.
