A private council car park has received a new makeover at taxpayers’ expense.

The car park, in Mint Walk, is used by Croydon councillors and officials.

As part of the refurbishment, a new traffic light system, barriers and shutters have been installed.

And it has received a new lick of paint with the colour scheme matching the council’s.

Labour Councillor Timothy Godfrey was far from impressed with the new look.

He said: “I'm sure those that are waiting on a crucial council service waiting list are really pleased our exclusive, secure car park has been 'invested' in.”

A council spokesman said: “The council recently made a number of security improvements at the car park underneath the town hall complex following vandalism to councillors’ cars.

“This is the first time work has been carried out there since it opened in 1991 and was prompted by concerns from Labour and Conservative councillors.

“Concrete columns were also painted white to improve their visibility.

“Similar work to improve lighting, signs and security at other car parks open to the general public is also being carried out.”
