An army officer from Wandsworth is out in Afghanistan training-up a police unit in Helmand province.

Captain Charlie Lee, 26, from Clapham, works as the officer commanding of the mentoring team to the Afghan National Civil Order Police.

The unit, headed by the 1st Battalion of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, specialises in responding to high threat incidents.

Capt Lee said: "They are a police force by trade, but with the extra paramilitary skills that are currently required in Helmand Province.

"Our team has a lot of enthusiasm for mentoring and I'm feeling very positive about the task ahead."

Capt Lee, a former Whitgift school pupil in Croydon has previously deployed to Afghanistan as part of the team which delivers final preparatory training for soldiers before they deploy from Camp Bastion.

Capt Lee spends his evenings planning the following day's activities and drinking tea with his Afghan and American counterparts. He said he is looking forward to two weeks off back in Britain with his family and is planning a holiday in Barbados with his girlfriend when he returns home.
