A woman suffered burns while cooking last night after her pan caught fire.

Firefighters from Purley and New Addington fire stations were called to the property in Leighton Gardens, South Croydon, at around 9.30pm.

On discovering the pan was alight, the woman threw the pan from the property, but burnt her hands in the process.

One firefighter said: "There was quite a bit of damage to the kitchen. We treated the woman with first aid before the ambulance arrived."

A spokeswoman for London Ambulance, said: "Our staff treated one patient, a woman believed to be 50 years old and took her to Croydon University Hospital."
