David Wright is determined to play a part in Crystal Palace's Carling Cup semi-final against Cardiff City tonight, writes Sam Ross.

The match will be the biggest game of the 31-year-old's career after he missed out on Wigan Athletic's Carling Cup final against Manchester United in 2006.

The former Wigan full-back was injured in a tackle by then team-mate Paul Scharner during training and was forced to sit in the stands at the Millennium Stadium and watch on as Wigan lost 4-0.

Wright, who was an integral part of Palace's defensive line in the 2-1 quarter final win at Old Trafford, was former manager George Burley's first signing as Eagles boss but is more than enjoying playing under Dougie Freedman.

"I have loved it here. I came here as a full back and they've turned me into a defensive midfielder,” said the 31-year-old.

"It was great to get to Old Trafford and play the way we played but the game against Cardiff will be the biggest game of my career, if I'm selected."

Wright is in constant admiration of the abilities of the younger players around him at the club and is especially impressed with Nathaniel Clyne. "They know each other very well, they grew up with one another at the academy but they get on with the older boys like myself as well, there is a good mix in the dressing room," he added.

"Clyne has a great future. I have never seen anyone better one on one close up. He reminds me of Ashley Cole."
