An Elmbridge tennis league is set to give leisurely games a competitive edge.

The mixed singles league is open for men and women aged 18-plus, of all standards.

Players are organised into groups of six to eight, contact details are circulated, and everyone gets in touch with each other to arrange their own matches.

Matches can be played on any Elmbridge tennis court that suits all parties, and every player who completes three matches by the halfway mark will receive a free can of balls.

Group winners will get £20 and a certificate and all members can benefit from a British Tennis Membership worth £25, which gives you a rating so you can compare yourself with other people.

Councillor Jan Fuller, said: “While the council continues to encourage free recreational tennis on our tennis courts, this alternative is for those wishing a more structured competitive edge in 2012.

“While the main purpose of the league is fun and enjoyment, a bit of competition usually brings out the best in everyone.”

Round one starts on February 6.
