A Fulham parish's new community centre and the arrival of a new vicar have been topped off with a New Year Honour.

St Andrew’s, Fulham Fields, will officially welcome new vicar Canon Guy Wilkinson on January 30 and will also congratulate him after it was announced he received a CBE in the New Year’s Honours List for services to inter-faith relations.

The citation refers to his time as Archbishop of Canterbury’s Secretary for inter religious affairs.

Canon Guy said: "I feel very honoured by Her Majesty and I accept this CBE on behalf of all the parish clergy who work in the many parishes with people and communities of faiths other than Christian.

"We work together for the good of all."

Canon Wilkinson was previously Archdeacon of Bradford and a parish priest in Birmingham, Guildford and Coventry.

Trevor Dawson, churchwarden, said: "We are very pleased to welcome Guy who will take forward St Andrew’s tradition of warmly welcoming everyone to our services and to all our social and community activities."

St Andrew’s is just completing a brand new Centre with first class facilities for the use of the parish community.

And Peter Strefford, pastoral assistant, said the centre would be a real help to the community.

"This new centre will mean that we can give a better service to the 100 or so homeless people who come to us for a meal and fellowship each week, and to our parents and children groups, the fruit and veg co-op and much more," he said.

The new centre manager, Liz Wilson, added: "We hope that people and groups will come and see what we have on offer for activities, children’s parties, seminars and all the things that communities do and need space for."

"It has been the parish church for the past 150 years and the renewal of the church and the new centre takes us into the next century of our life here," said Canon Guy.
