A 50-year-old man died in a motorway smash that sparked huge traffic delays during rush hour.

Surrey Police has appealed for witnesses to the two-vehicle crash, which happened on the anticlockwise carriageway of the M25 near Chertsey, on Monday, January 9.

A white Skoda Superb travelling between junction 11, Chertsey, and junction 10, Cobham, collided with a silver Volkswagen Polo shortly after 7am.

The M25 was closed in both directions for an air ambulance to land on the carriageway at about 8am.

Severe delays ensued, all the way back to junction 15 on the M4 and junction nine of the M25.

The A3 was also severely clogged.

The driver of the Skoda, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses are asked to call Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference P12008100, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, with information.
