A trader faces having his alcohol licence withdrawn after two teenagers bought booze from his store and nearly died.

Harpreet Singh, owner of the Bola Brothers Food & Wine shop in Streatham High Road, has been caught selling alcohol and cigarettes to underage customers on five occasions by Trading Standards officers at Lambeth Council.

In November last year, two girls, both aged 14, were hospitalised for hypothermia after buying vodka from the store and were told by doctors they “could have died”.

According to a report due to be discussed at the council’s licensing committee in February, Mr Harpreet has already been hauled before the courts on several occasions.

In June 2010, he pleaded guilty to selling cigarettes to a person under 18 and was handed fines totalling £315 at Camberwell Green Magistrates Court. In April 2011, he was fined £815 for the same offence.

The shamed businessman has also been caught selling duty-free cigarettes and alcohol, as well as out-of-date sandwiches.

Trading Standards officer Bernard Conmy has requested that the shop’s licence be revoked on the grounds of public safety and the protection of children.

He said: “In little over two years there have been five underage sales at this shop, two of alcohol and three of tobacco. The last underage sale of alcohol could have resulted in the deaths of two 14 year old girls.

“If ID had been checked this would not have happened. Despite a caution, two prosecutions, and a fixed penalty ticket, staff still failed to carry out basic checks.”

In Brixton, the Quick Stop shop on Acre Lane also faces having its licence withdrawn for allegedly attracting serious crime and disorder.

Councillors will review the licence, which has been temporarily suspended, at a meeting on Thursday.
