A holocaust memorial service is to be held at Croydon Town Hall on Friday.

The service begins at 11.30am with the lighting of a commerative candle in the foyer, and the cermony will continue until 1.15pm.

Rachel Levy, a holocaust survivor, will be giving a presentation about her personal experiences.

Children from nearby schools will also be doing readings and performing a short drama, in addition to displaying their artwork inspired by the tragedy.

From January 23 there will be a holocaust photographic exhibition on display in the Central Library titled 'Hidden Histories: Untold Stories.'

The photos will be on display until January 30, and on January 27 there will also be live music, from the Croydon and South Norwood community choirs.

They will be singing a number of atmospheric and haunting songs to accompany the photos.

Councillor Vidhi Mohan, cabinet member for communities and the big society, said: "Although remembering the holocaust is always a sombre occassion.

"This event allows us to celebrate the lives of the innocent people who perished and to cherish the freedom from persecution that most of us enjoy today.

"However, there are still people in the world who seek to oppress others and by coming together in this way, we can demonstrate our strength and solidarity against such tyranny."

The event is free and open to any member of the public, but places are limited.

Anyone attending should contact carol.sawyer@croydon.gov.uk to confirm attendance.
