World cycling champion Mark Cavendish has given his backing for this year’s P&G Surrey School Games.
The programme has been organised by Surrey County Council, in a bid to get more young people involved in sport and cultural activities in the lead up to the 2012 Games.
Mr Cavendish, said: “The P&G Surrey School Games has my full support. This is going to be the most exciting year of sport this country has ever seen and it is fantastic that in Surrey there are opportunities for young people to try out new sports, including cycling.”
Held across 150 days, the school games will involve contests in more than 20 sports and more than 5,500 young people are expected to take part.
Councillor Denise Saliagopoulos said: “We’re encouraging as many young people as possible to take part in sport and the P&G Surrey School Games is a great way of doing this.”
The games kicked off on Friday, January 20, at ACS Cobham International School.
