One person has been taken to St Helier Hospital following a large fire at a garage in North Cheam.

The fire is almost out firefighters are still at the scene at Evans Autos in London Road, North Cheam.

One person is being treated for minor injuries at St Helier hospital after flames engulfed the garage.

The North Cheam fire affected nine garages behind a car dealership on London Rd.

Sixty people were moved from the area as nearby flats were evacuated as a precaution.

Three people who had been moved from their homes on Edwards Close and are taking shelter in a nearby launderette.

The residents have been told by police they may not be allowed back into their homes for up to 24 hours.

Children from a nursery near to the blaze are being kept inside until parents arrive.

Manager of Kidsunlimited, Jasmina Haig said: “We are reassuring parents by texting and email them.”

Smoke could be seen from Sutton town centre after the fire took hold at 2.30pm which has engulfed a large part of the building.

Six fire engines and 30 fire fighters are at the scene.

Police have cordoned off a large section of the road, but are slowly letting residents of the street return to their houses.

Traffic is being diverted through Sainsbury’s supermarket in North Cheam. Roads are expected to return to normal in next two to three hours after they opened one lane of London Road to through traffic.
