A 99-year-old woman could be Sutton’s oldest drinker.

Grandmother-of-26 Nancy Weston turned 99 on January 16.

Her daughters and granddaughter took her out for a birthday lunch at her local, the Lord Nelson in North Cheam on Monday.

However, do not be fooled by her age, as Mrs Weston is always in a pair of heels, matching clothes and is never seen with a walking stick.

Over lunch she said she liked to drink sherry and her daughters joked her cupboard was like an off-licence.

Granddaughter Kim Matthews said: “We’ve tried a lot of pubs, but she likes the chips in here.”

Nanny Weston, who grew up in Wimbledon, had many stories to tell in the pub.

During the war her children were evacuated from London to Manchester and she was sent with other expectant mothers to Leeds.

She ended up giving birth to her son in Hazelwood Castle, Tadcaster, York and joked he was her prince.

She said: “I’ve had two husbands, Frederick the first and Frederick the second.

“I’ve got 26 grandchildren and great-grandchildren – I want to hide in a cupboard at Christmas.

“I’ve been on the go all the time, I never sit down for five minutes. I still cook and wash, I don’t want house help.

“I don’t want to be 99, I want the numbers turned the other way round to 66.”

Mrs Weston always has a birthday party at her sheltered housing, Pollard House in Worcester Park where she is the longest staying resident.

However, this year she had two chest infections and was in bed the day before her party on Saturday, January 21.

However, nothing stops Mrs Weston and she surprised all her friends and family when she sang California Here I Come for them all.

She said: “I had no music, I rehearsed in my house when I was ill – I just had two chest infections.”

Mrs Weston spent her life making dresses and only stopped at the ripe old age of 90.

After the Queen Mother died, Mrs Weston wrote to the Queen and asked her what was going to happen to all her clothes as her mother was the same size as her.

Unfortunately, the reply said it would not be possible as the clothes would go to a museum.
