The organiser of a historical fair is looking for more participants and some theatrical entertainment.

Richard Marston, 54, from Worcester Park, has taken on the responsibility of organising this year’s Cheam Charter fair.

The fair is thought to date back to 1259 when Henry III granted Cheam a charter, making it a town; however, no-one has ever found the mysterious Charter.

Using his experience as an IT manager, Mr Marston has brought the fair into the 21st century by creating a website, Facebook page and Twitter account.

Mr Marston said: “Not knowing much about the Fair I decided to do some research and created the history page of the web site to share my findings.

“Looking into the history of the Fair has given me a feel for what went on in the past, some of which might be interesting to revive for the future.

“The first that caught my eye was the Mummer Plays so I decided to Tweet to see if anyone had any information about these plays at past events or knew of troupes still in existence.”

By trawling through souvenir brochures from past fair’s Mr Marston found in the 1950’s part of the entertainment was provided by mummers.

Mummers are an old tradition of travelling actors who perform at festivals and fairs.

Mr Marston is appealing to anyone with any historical information, in particular documents or photographs about the fair or details of mumming.

He would also like to encourage local charities, businesses or groups to take part in this year’s fair on May 19.
