The Metropolitan Police has released its report into the August riots.

Entitled Four Days in August, the 144-page report encompasses the London-wide riots, which started on Saturday, August 6, following the shooting of Mark Duggan in Tottenham.

Among several case studies is a detailed look at the night Croydon was ransacked by looters as several properties burned on August 8.

Croydon was the worst hit of all London boroughs, with the most crimes reported.

The case study revealed 477 people had been arrested and 305 charged in relation to offences which took place during the riots in Croydon.

And there is still 1,000 hours of CCTV still to be viewed of the looting and disorder.

The MPS has made a series of recommendations spanning critical incident management, independent advice, community engagement, intelligence, public order tactics, investigation and criminal justice.

The report acknowledged “police numbers were not enough and they did not arrive quickly enough to deal with speed with which the violence escalated and its spread”.

The MPS said it was reviewing its mobilisation plan and was working to increase the number of specially-trained public disorder officers.

It follows Croydon borough’s own independent review into the disorder which was released at the end of last month.

The 41-page report was critical of the police response in the borough as it revealed Croydon had to wait 35 minutes from when the disorder started to when the police asked more backup from public order trained officers.
