A train driver killed himself minutes after attacking his wife with a knife in her home.

Tariq Goss died after he was hit by a train at Upper Warlingham station in the early hours of March 2.

Minutes earlier police had been called to the property he used to share with Laurence his French wife of nearly 12 years in Well Farm Heights off Godstone Road, Whyteleafe, to reports a woman in her 30's had been attacked.

She was taken to East Surrey Hospital suffering knife wounds to her hands and neck but, was later discharged.

The 44-year-old was a train driver who worked for Southern Rail and was based at the Selhurst depot.

Mr Goss, a father-of-four, was brought up in Pakistan and had a six-year-old daughter with his wife. He also had three other children from previous relationships.

He was living with family in East Croydon at the time of his death and was last seen leaving the family home at about 1.30pm on March 1.

His cousin Furqan Hussain, 29, said: "He said he was going to see his friend. He said bye to the family, a normal 'see you later'. The whole day went by and there was no sign of Tariq.

"He has gone up to his friends and not come back until the next day before, but we knew he had work at 9am the next day."

Mr Hussain said when police knocked at their door at 5.30am they knew it wasn't a good sign.

"They said I am very sorry, they had found him at 2am. It was a shock, they said he was found dead at a rail way crossing near Whyteleafe. They don't want to say it was a suicide but we knew it was straight away.

"Then they told us his wife was in hospital, they said she had been hurt in an assault. We went to see her the next day but she had already been discharged."

Remembering his cousin, who thought of as a brother Mr Hussain said: "Tariq was a friendly, jolly guy. He was sincere and genuine and would go out of his way to make people happy.

"We had no indication he was capable of doing this, we wish he was here and had done things differently.

"We miss him every day he's not here, he was much loved by his family."

A post mortem examination found Mr Goss died of multiple injuries, an inquest into his death was opened and adjourned at Woking Coroners Court.
