Green businesses celebrated their achievements at an award ceremony last week.

Thirteen businesses from across Hackbridge were presented with awards in the Rose and Crown Pub in Wallington on March 14.

The awards are part of the Hackbridge Green Business Network project.

For the last two years, 40 forward thinking businesses have been working towards the vision of a green economy.

Winners on the evening included The Grange restaurant for its water efficiency which has seen its water use reduced by 80 per cent, meanwhile the Little Oak Tree Care tree surgeons was praised for its sustainability.

The winners received certificates and green prizes such as solar-powered chargers for mobile phones and vegetable bags from nearby Sutton Community Farm.

Businesses involved in the project have saved over 100 tonnes of CO2 and 2.5 million litres of water.

The project is run by local environmental charity BioRegional with funding from Sutton Council and The European Regional Development Find.

Anthony Probert, BioRegional's Project Manager, said "It has been extremely rewarding working with these small businesses to reduce their environmental impact. Organisations have been keen to get involved. Considering the current economic climate, this says a lot about the determination, awareness and priorities of businesses in Hackbridge."

Councillor Colin Hall, Environment spokesman at Sutton Council, said: "Sutton Council is delighted to support the Hackbridge Green Business Awards. The event celebrated the efforts many of our businesses are taking to help us achieve our goal of making Hackbridge the country's first sustainable suburb. Whether it's saving water or using new, eco-friendly technology, these forward-thinking businesses are really doing their bit to make Hackbridge greener."

The Hackbridge Green Business Network is part of the wider One Planet Sutton initiative, where Hackbridge is the pilot suburb.

One Planet Sutton is a community-driven vision which helps people who live and work in the London Borough of Sutton build a resilient green future together.
