Richmond-based single scuuller Alan Campbell reckoned winning the British senior trials is close to beating the world’s best.

The Irishman won his eighth British senior single sculls trial on the Olympic course at Eton Dorney on Sunday, putting himself in the box seat to be named in the Team GB rowing squad on April 4.

And Campbell admitted the success could be important come the Olympic regatta.

“It’s good to get the eighth win and on the Olympic course. That makes it special, especially with the support on the banks and it gives me a good memory to store up of racing here,” he said.

“I’ve said it before and will repeat it now, the British Trials is one of the toughest events we do, racing against our team-mates, but also against some of the best people in the world.”

Molesey Boat Club skipper Andrew Triggs-Hodge and partner Peter Reed successfully defended their men’s pairs crown, finishing ahead of clubmates James Foad, Moe Sbihi, Tom James and Greg Searle.

Head coach Jurgen Grobler is yet to decide whether the pair will go in the coxless fours crew or stay as they are.

But Triggs-Hodge admitted the weekend win was all the motivation he needed.

“There was a great atmosphere. Knowing people are supporting us is a big motivation for the training in the coming months, and it is a real source of pride, as an athlete, winning final trials,” he added.
