A charity is hoping to raise an additional £30,000 to finish work on a special centre for sick animals in Egypt.

The Animal Welfare Charity of Luxor (AWCL), based in Epsom, is halfway to completing the medical centre, despite recent violence following a political revolution in the country.

It is also using donations to provide specialist treatment for thousands of animals in small farming communities.

Last year, it spent more than £23,000 on medicines for sick animals after receiving donations of just over £40,000.

A spokesman said: “We are addressing a desperate need to educate the children of non-tourist Luxor in the proper care of their animals and the animals that work for their family.

“We work outside the tourist areas in the very poor farming villages of El Marise and Armant.

“Though we call them villages it is a very large area for us to cover. It is hot, dirty and at times quite distressing but also very rewarding.”

The charity is holding a Tack Sale and Spring Fair on Saturday, March 24, in Headley Village Hall, Church Lane, Headley, Surrey, between 10am and 2pm.

The fair will include refreshments, cakes, bric-a-brac, face painting and a tombola.
