Residents living near a historic windmill received a surprise gingerbread brunch on Saturday as volunteers promoted its spring event programme.

A taskforce from the Brixton Windmill in Blenheim Gardens gave out the tasty treats, which were donated by the Old Post Office Bakery in Clapham, to 250 neighbours.

The windmill will reopen on Saturday, April 7, for the spring season. Planned events include an Easter egg hunt, arts and crafts sessions and a May Day parade on May 7.

Built in 1816, the windmill was revamped in 2010 following a £581,222 cash boost from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Lambeth Council and local people.

Jean Kerrigan, Chair of the Friends of Windmill Gardens, said: “The local community are an important part of the Brixton Windmill story and we could not have achieved so much without them.

“This is our way of saying thank you to them and making sure they have had a chance to see inside their windmill.

“We also want to say a huge thank you to the Old Post Office Bakery for donating the gingerbread windmills.”
