They say that exercise and a little adventure helps keeps you young. It would certainly seem to be true for a man named this morning on the official Olympic website London2012.com as a torch bearer.

The site proudly announced that Jeffrey Gordon, from Putney Hill, was 21-years-old and one of 39 people chosen to run 300m through Wandsworth on July 23.

But a quick glance at the picture next to his entry suggested Mr Gordon was much, much older.

When he rang the Wandsworth Guardian this afternoon to let us know about the signal honour he confirmed that he remembers the 1948 Olympics and is actually 57 years older than announced.

Fortunately carrying the torch 300m should prove a doddle for Mr Gordon, 78, as he still clocks up three marathons a year.

Unaware of the controversy over his age, Mr Gordon said he was delighted to receive confirmation of his place last week and believes he was put forward by fellow marathon colleagues.

He said: "I feel quite honored to be part of this event, and I appreciate why I have been chosen. I am very grateful for this opportunity.

"I remember the 1948 London Olympics and I know many people who participated in it.

"I never expected to ever be part of the Olympics in my lifetime, and I am very thankful to those who nominated for me."

Mr Gordon has worked in the legal system for over 60 years, still puts in 12 hour days and insists he has no intention of retiring any time soon.

He said: "I run in all the marathons and take part as much as I can. In the past I have done 26 and 40 mile runs so I don’t think this run will take much preparation."

Gordon is an active member of the 150 year-old Thames Hare and Hounds club in Roehampton.
