The Mayor of London said he was "committed to" extending the tramlink in Merton” during a walk about in Wimbledon town centre.
Boris Johnson said: “Tramlink is something that we are committed to and is something that we think is very exciting for Merton.”
Mr Johnson offered no further details on how the project would be paid for or implemented.
The Mayor was speaking at Wimbledon station on Friday, where he unveiled the official Olympic ambassador uniforms.
The Mayor also spoke to Diana Sterck, chief executive of Merton Chamber of Commerce.
The visit came days before the official start of the London Mayoral election campaign, which will see Boris battling for a second term against a range of rivals.
