Wandsworth Council has sought to clarify its position over the future plans of Elliott School.
Last week the Wandsworth Guardian wrote a story stating that the main building was being demolished as part of the school's conversion into an ARK academy.
In fact the council are not demolishing the main building but, according to the proposals, the school's sports hall and technology wing could be taken down.
A new four-court sports hall will be constructed at the southern end of the site to replace it shpould it be demolished.
A spokesman for the council said: "It has never been our intention to demolish Elliott School, but rather to secure its future. We recognise its architectural importance and will be working closely with English Heritage on the building's remodelling and restoration.
"Once the work is finished the building, which is currently is a very poor state, will be restored and Putney will have a school fit for the 21st century."
