Crystal Palace made it 10 games unbeaten as Sean Scannell’s 92nd minute header gave them a 1-0 win at home to Barnsley.

In what was a largely forgettable game, Scannell flung himself through the air to meet Kagisho Dikgacoi’s deflected cross to score his first goal since September 10 and snatch three points.

Prior to that though, the Eagles were flat and lacked inspiration up front without the suspended Wilfried Zaha.

Fans had to wait until the 79th minutes to see a shot on target when Scannell cut inside and fired a weak effort toward goal that was simple for David Button.

Barnsley were not much better. Matt Done was the only player to stand out and he twice tested Julian Speroni from distance but both times it was easy for the Palace keeper.

Apart from Done’s long range efforts, the first half was uneventful, with Andy Gray the only other player to test Speroni but his glancing header went straight to the Argentine.

Many found themselves looking forward to the half-time entertainment as a group of Palace fans danced with the Crystal Girls for Sport Relief.

Palace were a bit better second half as Nathaniel Clyne’s cross just evaded Chris Martin and Scannell fired over within five minutes of the restart.

But that was as good as it got until Scannell’s shot with 11 minutes left before his last minute winner.

Jonathan Parr’s throw was headed to an offside looking Dikgacoi by substitute Kwesi Appiah and when his cross skimmed off Jim McNulty, Scannell was there to nod in and send Palace up to 11th, six points off the play-offs.

Whether Palace deserved it is another matter but history will remember the scoreline, not the performance.
