A former England rugby captain was in Mitcham this week to talk about his gruelling bid to raise £2m for charity.

Lawrence Dallaglio, who helped England win the World Cup in 2003, led 70 cyclists in a 100km training ride from Halfords in Streatham Road on Saturday, March 31.

Mr Dallaglio will be joined in Olympia, Greece, by another England captain, cricket’s Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, on April 23 for the Dallaglio Flintoff Cycle Slam 2012.

Setting off from Olympia in Greece, they will ride with 400 other cyclists for 22-days to London in five non-stop stages across 2,817km of terrain.

Mr Dallaglio said: "“The ride is going to be unbelievably tough, but we’re confident that with support from our Halfords mechanics and the wider team we’ll stay on schedule and exceed our fundraising target."

The team is hoping to raise £2,012,000 for the Dallaglio Foundation supporting Cancer Research UK, the AF Foundation and Virgin Unite.

David Wild, the chief executive of Halfords, said his mechanics would be on the road with Dallaglio and Flintoff to ensure their bicycles were in “top order” throughout the charity ride.
