Tenancy agreement changed for Sutton dog attack family pet

A dog owner whose family pet attacked another dog had the Staffordshire Bull Terrier neutered and microchipped as a condition of keeping her home.

Jennie Mayfield's six-year-old terrier, Louis, injured another dog by biting it while walking on wasteground in Sutton.

Mrs Mayfield, 43, who lives off Brighton Road, was visited by police following the attack, but the owner of the other dog did not want to press charges.

The visit was followed by a formal letter from police explaining the importance of owners taking responsibility for their dogs.

Then as part of her tenancy agreement, Sutton Housing Partnership, insisted the dog was not only neutered, but also micro chipped and photographed.

The action was part of work by LEAD (Local Environmental Awareness on Dogs), a police led, multi-partnership initiative to encourage responsible dog ownership.

The key organisations involved are Sutton police, Sutton Council, Sutton Housing Partnership, registered social landlords, the Riverside Animal Centre and RSPCA.

Mrs Mayfield said: "Louis is a great family pet dog. Whatever I can do to keep him safe and to keep him here, I’m willing to do."

The LEAD initiative was prompted by the fatal dog attack in Demesne Road, Wallington, on 23 December 2010, when 52-year-old Barbara Williams died after being attacked in her home by an ex-paratrooper Alex Blackburn-Smith's 8st Neopolitan Mastiff.

As a dog owner myself this infuriates me! Dogs should be on a lead at all times if it is not friendly with other animals! These things wouldnt happend if this was the case. My dog has been a victim to irresponsible owners oo many times! It needs to be stressed how important dogs that are aggressive are kept on a tight lead

Shouldn't the dog have been neutered and microchipped already?

And it would be better for everyone if dogs were muzzled in public.

yeah, i thought spaying/neutering & microchipping was an obligation? what responsible pet owner doesn't have this done straight away? leads and muzzles in public should be a given, also...

eh, i've had second thoughts, because not everyone has the luxury of a decent sized back garden, a park or beach is needed for a dog to have a good run :) still should be wearing muzzles, tho, just in case.

it's not all dogs that need to be muzzled- but yes, neutering and micro-chipping should be the first thing ANY responsible pet owner does- we had a lovely cat on our allotments recently who if he hadn't been micro-chipped could not have been returned to his owners, and he was the second one that I have actually heard of about four years ago we had a temporary guest on our plot who, we found was chipped, and we got him back to his people- he'd been missing for 5 months when we found him- we missed him when he went but how happy must his family have been when he was returned!

Indeed - if your non-microchipped pet goes missing and another family claims them, you don't really have a leg to stand on.
