David Weir equalled Baronness Tanni Grey-Thompson's record of six wheelchair London Marathon titles as he won the men's wheelchair race on Sunday.

In a thrilling finish, Wallington's Weir edged out Switzerland's Marcel Hug after breaking away from a group of seven in the final straight to win in one hour, 32.26 seconds, one second ahead of Hug.

It puts Weir on course for gold at this summer's Paralympics, but the 32-year-old did say it could be his last time at the marathon.

"This is really special, even better than the first one," he said.

"I was really emotional because I haven't decided what I'm doing after the Paralympics so this could be my final time.

"I know it wasn't a really fast time, but I think everyone realised it was going to be a race between us rather than the clock.

"Grey-Thompson inspired me in this sport. I saw her compete in Sydney as a youngster and I went on to medal in 2008.

"It is a privilege to be up there with her now."

Why isn't Sutton Council shouting from the rooftop about this lifelong resident's fantastic achievements? Councillors too busy bigging themselves up to bother with the mere residents. There isn't a lot to be proud of in the London Borough of Sutton thesedays but David Weir's achievements are definitely one of them.
