Floods hit Sutton in a period of drought

Sutton has faced miserable weather all week despite being in the midst of a drought.

These pictures show flooding in North Cheam on Wednesday and Sutton on Friday.

Rain and thundery showers are expected to continue into next week.

The Met Office has warned that the recent downpour could lead to flooding and the hail could cause tricky travel conditions.

Despite the severe weather warnings from the Met Office, Sutton and East Surrey water says the hosepipe ban is to stay.

This is because there has been two years of exceptionally low rainfall and the ground has hardened as a result.

Around 85 per cent of the water we rely on comes from an aquifer, however, because the ground is so hard it has run off and will largely be taken up by plants.

We live on an island, it rains ALL THE TIME> Just because we dare have a few days of sunny weather we call a drought? It's a scam to reserve water for the Olympics (as someone who is working the Olympics suggested to me) and to keep our prices/bills up. It's manipulation of the masses by a communist government and greedy water companies.

Isn't it about time a ban was put on the wealthy drilling their own private boreholes? It's our water they are tapping into after all.

So that's official in the report, the water has "run off". Damned fiendishly clever and cunning stuff this water. Needs the water companies to pursue and apprehend it.
