Six fire engines and specialist teams from London Fire Brigade were called to a hazardous material incident in Carshalton this afternoon which turned out to be a false alarm.

A resident living above one of the shops on the high street smelled smoke and sounded the alarm.

Although a man believed to be in his 40s was taken to St Helier Hospital after he complained of feeling unwell, the incident is now under control and traffic is flowing freely through the area.

Firemen and specialist teams on the the scene carried out a number of routine checks in the area, but nothing was found.
