Police are investigating a suspected arson attack at a block of flats last night.

Firefighters were called at 9.07pm to Sutton Court, in Brighton Road, Sutton, to reports of a fire.

They said the incident was being treated as arson.

It is believed a window to a bedroom in a ground floor flat was smashed from the outside shortly before the fire started.

Neighbours said other windows had been smashed at the property in the past few days.

The cause of the blaze- which completely gutted the bedroom and left the flat badly smoke damaged - is still under investigation.

No one was injured in the fire. It is understood the man who lived in the flat was watching TV in another room when the fire started.

Fire crews from Sutton, Wallington and Croydon fire stations attended.

A fire investigation unit was expected at the scene this morning.

Police were also on scene, which has been cordoned off while officers continue their enquiries.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at 9.12pm last night to a fire in a flat in Sutton Court, Brighton Road, Sutton.

"Police officers attended, there are no reported injuries.

"Enquiries are under way to establish the cause. No arrests have been made."
