A man has appeared in court accused of putting lives of risk by setting fire to his own home.

Lee Paul Songhurst, 28, of Sutton Court, Brighton Road, appeared in Croydon Magistrates Court yesterday (May 23) charged with arson with intent to endanger life.

It followed an incident at the block of flats on May 12.

Residents of the block of flats had to be evacuated following the blaze, that began in a cardboard box on Mr Songhurst's windowsill.

No one was seriously injured, but £10,000 of damage was caused to the Sutton Housing Partnership-owned flat.

Mr Songhurst was remanded in custody until his next appearance at Croydon Crown Court in July.
