St Helier Hospital has issued a statement on the £219m promised for the hospital’s redevelopment.

The rebuild was approved in March 2010 for a major redevelopment of the hospital including a new state-of-the-art hospital building with 346 beds.

However, the content of the rebuild might be modified by the health care review, Better Services Better Value, which has placed the hospital’s A&E and maternity at risk.

Tim Wilkins, Project Director for the St Helier Hospital redevelopment said: “Over the last year, we have developed a £12.7 million plan to move services and staff from the areas of St Helier Hospital which are due to be demolished as part of the overall £219 million redevelopment scheme.

“These services, which include the majority of the hospital’s outpatient clinics, will be moved to our Sutton Hospital site on a temporary basis, returning once the work is complete.

“Before work can begin on moving services from St Helier to Sutton, there are a number of steps that need to take place.

“The first is that South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, who currently provide outpatient services from Sutton Hospital, will need to move out of the hospital. This is due to take place in August.

“Once the mental health services are in their new location, we can begin work to survey the buildings that we will be using, and begin any necessary improvement works.

“This will allow us to begin the move of services from St Helier to Sutton early next year. These moves will be staggered over a period of nine months.

“The Trust is working closely with its NHS partners to secure approval of these plans over the next few months, which will allow the Trust to achieve these timescales.

“Construction at St Helier Hospital is planned to begin in early 2015, with completion scheduled for late 2017.”
