Hosepipe ban to remain in Sutton

The hosepipe ban will remain in Sutton The hosepipe ban will remain in Sutton

The hosepipe ban in Sutton is to remain, despite expectations restrictions will be lifted sooner in other parts of London.

Thames Water, which provides water to the majority of the capital, said as a result of recent heavy rain fall it could lift its hosepipe ban sooner than expected.

Anglian Water has also indicated it could lift its ban early.

But Sutton and East Surrey Water (SESW) has said it is not expecting to lift the ban.

It said SESW drew 85 per cent of its supplies from boreholes sunk deep underground.

Ground-water levels remain at record lows and are showing no sign that the recent heavy rainfall is percolating deep down to replenish the aquifer.

The water company said Thames Water and Anglian Water benefited from relying much more on surface water supplies, which have mostly returned to normal.

Mike Hegarty, SESW operations director, said: "After two years of record below-average rainfall, particularly over the crucial winter months, it will take more than one month of heavy rainfall to remove the underlying problems caused by two years of drought."

There is still no date for when the hosepipe ban in Sutton could be lifted.

Calls for bans to be lifted came after prolonged periods of rainfall across the south east.

Why is this farcical? SESW have clearly stated the reasons why, should they magic water in to their aquifers?

Sutton Water sold off the reservoir near opposite Sutton B&Q for a housing estate at the Cliff Walk; they are too reliant on ground water. Pity we don't have the freedom to choose another supplier as with the other utilities. Sutton is more interested in trying to make us feel guilty about using the stuff. They've just upped my charge by 10.2% at the same time as the hosepipe ban and their PR has termed this increase "a little above inflation". With all the extra homes being crammed into Sutton we need a water grid as we have for gas and electricity but also extra reservoir capacity. I'm wondering now they've sold off the gas holder in Sutton for the big development will there be a shortage of gas next as the utilities cash in on the land boom and sell their storage assets?

Is Sutton Water sending out Frogmen to check on breaches of the hosepipe ban?

How come other water companies have lifted the ban or manage their water supply adequately so their customers do not get hosepipes bans? Sutton the so called greener cleaner borough is going to start turning decidedly brown!

Maybe if they spent a little more of the money we pay them on fixing leaks we wouldn't be having these 'shortages' in the first place :s

Interesting to read the Environment Agency's Jan 2012 response to the company's Drought Plan. I'm not sure I understood the factual basis of the submission at all!
