Attempted murder arrests after attack on Sutton pensioner

A 70-year-old man is in intensive care following an attack in Sutton this morning.

Manuel Mendez, 70, was attacked at his home in Clarson Court, in Benhill Avenue, Sutton.

Mr Mendez, who has dementia, was discovered shortly before 9am by his carer.

Police believe he was assaulted but said it was unclear how or why he received his injuries, which are considered life-threatening.

Mr Mendez was rushed to hospital by road ambulance. He had injuries to his face, head, shoulder and body.

He remains unconscious in hospital in an induced coma.

Police have been at the block carrying out door-to-door enquiries, while forensics team have also been seen at the block.

The incident is being investigated by Sutton CID.

London's Air Ambulance was dispatched to the scene, landing on an area of grass behind the block of flats.

The doctor from the air ambulance accompanied Mr Mendez in the road ambulance.

Mr Mendez is well-known at the Salvation Army centre in Benhill Avenue, which he regularly visited with his carer.
